Governance of local economic development in sub-Saharan Africa : who are the dancers and do they act ‘in concert’?

Abstract: This paper is a critical reflection on recent theories of local economic development with special reference to the problematic situation in rural sub-Saharan Africa. Growth coalitions between local governments and private sector actors or community associations may not yet exist in Africa.
