Recognition and democratisation : ‘new roles’ for traditional leaders in sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract: The present working paper reviews recent literature on the role of traditional leaders in sub-Saharan Africa and discusses the potential consequences of the current waves of democratization and recognition of traditional leaders in decentralized governance.
