The challenges of women participation in local governance : the case of Accra and Tamale metropolitan assemblies

Abstract: Qualitative data and statistics of female councilors from 1994 to 2006 in Tamale and Accra are used to assess the factors that may be accountable for their small numbers as compared to their male counterparts. In addition, the history and structure of local governance in Ghana is described.
