The 4th world Congress of UCLG (United Cities and Local Governments) is taking place under the theme “Imagine Society, Build Democracy” from the 1st and to 4th of October 2013 in Rabat, the capital city of Morocco. The second world Summit for local and regional leaders takes place at the same time as the first UCLG Summit to be held in Africa.
In the Summit, members examine UCLG’s strategic priorities and working program for Post-2015 Development and the preparation towards Habitat III. Also, local leaders can debate about current and future challenges which their cities and regions face. Topics include
- Improving quality of life
- Strengthening solidarity between regions
- Accompanying the new governance and the changes in the Mediterranean zone
- Managing diversity
The web platform, ‘Rabat 2013’ provides a space for online discussion and exchange on these thematic issues of the Summit.
Rabat was chosen as a host city due to certain recognition for the effort for decentralization and support for dynamics led by African local authorities. It will be a unique opportunity to learn first-hand of the major democratic and local governance reforms taken place in Morocco in recent years and to share and exchange experiences among expected over 3,000 participants from more than 100 countries. The Summit will play an important role to facilitate an on-going dialogue between local authorities and their key partners to define new priorities.
