The Knowledge Portal: Practice in Participation

A web-based knowledge portal called “Practice in Participation” is both a digital resource and a forum for practitioners to share and learn from others’ field-based knowledge on participatory practices. The portal has crossed the 900 member mark and presently more than 100 knowledge resources are available.

The portal was opened by Society for Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA), an international center for learning and promotion of participation and democratic governance, on the occasion of their 30th anniversary in February 2012. The one-of-its-kind initiative aims at global south-to-south collaboration for preserving, maintaining and collaborating on issues and practices of social justice. Members are practitioners from the community/grassroots organizations, academia/policy institutions, and donor agencies, and they can get knowledge and exchange of ideas through documents, case studies, videos and photographs on different themes participatory practices.

Currently, the portal groups participatory practices around the themes of

  • Institutional strengthening
  • Learning and Training
  • Planning and Budgeting
  • Monitoring, Evaluation and Impact Assessment
  • Implementation and Management
  • Organizing and Mobilization
  • Advocacy and Dialogue

The portal will act as an intermediary for knowledge on participatory practices by connecting practitioners working on similar themes from across the world. The portal will also impact social change as practitioners can have better impact of their work and local communities can value their local knowledge and be primary actors in changing their own lives.
